Understanding the AR-9 Platform
Direct Blowback vs. Gas Operated
Unlike an AR-15, most AR-9s use a "direct blowback" system. There is no gas tube. The bolt is blown back solely by the expanding gases in the chamber. This requires specific parts—namely, a heavier 9mm Bolt Carrier Group and a specialized Heavy Buffer (5oz - 8oz) to prevent the action from opening too early.
Dedicated 9mm Uppers
While you can use a standard AR-15 upper, our dedicated AR-9 Billet Uppers lack the forward assist and dust cover (which aren't needed for 9mm). This gives your build a slick, snag-free profile perfect for PCC competitions or home defense.
Last Round Bolt Hold Open (LRBHO)
One of the hardest features to get right on an AR-9 is the Last Round Bolt Hold Open. Many of our upper receivers feature integrated LRBHO linkage, ensuring your bolt locks back after the last shot—a critical feature for reload drills.
